Implement your home decor with cushions 

After all the work at home, the final step is decoration. When the decoration is coming, cushions are a major and necessary part of it. Although cushions are decorative and make the room more beautiful, they are also functional. We feel more comfortable when the cushions are on the sofa. 

Even if you don’t want to change anything in the room, buying new cushions will change the total look of the space. Let’s learn more about choosing the right cushions for your home.

History of cushions

Before, cushions were a part of the decoration, people used them to sit on them. The earliest sign mentioning cushions was 7000 years BC in Mesopotamia. In the Middle Ages. they were huge and made of stone or wood, covered with leather. What is interesting, people with low ranks used them for sitting. 

When we talk about Europe, the story of using cushions started from the Romans and Greeks. They made cushions with feathers, reeds, and straw, which we use today. 

Chinese people used hard cushions. They used bamboo, wood, bronze, and even ceramic and put some materials on them. 

In Japan, people used big cushions to sit on them. They put them around the room when they had guests. 

Different ‌cushion types

There are four types of cushions we use for decoration. They are lumbar, box, bolster and throw cushions.

Lumbar cushion. It’s a supportive cushion because we put it between the lower back and the bed or sofa. The standard size for the lumbar cushion is 14” x22”. Long lumbar cushions can look very nice on the sofa in the living room, and it will change the look of the sofa and the entire space. Otherwise, long cushions take more space on the sofa. 

Box cushion. Box cushions are a fantastic thing because they can fit any kind of room. It has a flat top and bottom, four sides, and can be made in different shapes. 

Bolster cushion. Bolster cushions can bring a sophisticated look to the room. People also use them for sleeping to relieve pressure and tight muscles. The common size is 20” wide. 

Throw cushion. This type of cushion is my favorite. It’s a decorative extra cushion and you can find them in different shapes, sizes, designs. 

Cushions in the living room

Choosing cushions for the living room plays a very important role in decoration. Do you have to match cushions with your sofa? No, you don’t! Actually, it’s very modern to put different cushions on the sofa, different in styles, colors or patterns.

Be careful with the number of cushions. Placing too many cushions on the sofa can look messy and not attractive. It will also take a lot of space for sitting. There is a “golden rule” for how many cushions you should place on the sofa. If you have a two seat sofa or a three seat sofa, place 2-3 cushions. Larger sofas can have over three cushions. Common cushions size for the standard couch is 18 to 20 inches square. 

If you have curtains in the living room, it can be very pleasant to match them with material or color. They don’t have to be matched, just make a balance with the tones or style. 

Cushions in the bedroom

Placing cushions on your bed will definitely style your bedroom and that is a significant purpose for the bedroom. With many cushions, you will also feel comfortable in the bed. Choose them in different sizes and shapes. Choose three to six cushions and place the largest at the back and the smallest at the front. 

Cushions in the garden

If you have a lounge sofa in your garden or on the balcony, adding decorative cushions can make the outdoor space more vivid and prettier. Choose bright colors or printed cushions to refresh the outdoor space. You can also buy them in different sizes, colors, and styles. The best material for outdoor cushions is polypropylene. It is fantastic because it has a high UV resistance and it can dry easily. The ideal foam for garden cushions is polypropylene foam.

Trendy cushions in 2022

This year, the soft and minimalistic look will be very modern, so you cannot go wrong with simple design cushions for your room. This is fantastic because you can combine them with colorful or styled cushions.
